Nomadsurance

Comparison

Nomadsurance vs IMG Global — matching platform or single-carrier shelf

IMG is a real international health insurer with a wide product range and a serious claims operation. Nomadsurance is a matching platform that compares plans across multiple carriers — including ones IMG can't sell you. Here's the honest read on which approach fits which nomad.

The honest tl;dr

If you already know you want IMG, you've researched the plan tier you need, and you're comfortable navigating a US-style insurance buying flow — buying direct from IMG is fine and you don't need us. We don't pretend otherwise. Where Nomadsurance earns its keep is the buyer who isn't sure whether IMG, Passportcard, April International, or another European IPMI product fits their actual travel pattern, health profile, and budget. We compare across carriers IMG doesn't (and can't) compare you against. For nomads with European banking, EU-friendly direct-billing needs, or who want a Passportcard-style debit card at the hospital instead of reimbursement claims, the panel approach typically wins. For US-citizen long-term expats with complex pre-existing conditions, IMG direct is often the right answer.

Winner by use case

We'll declare them as winner where they genuinely are.

  • Short-trip traveler (<3 months)

    Tie / depends

IMG's Patriot Travel Medical is genuinely competitive for short trips and worth quoting; our panel will surface trip-medical alternatives.

  • Long-term nomad (12+ months)

    Nomadsurance

Cross-carrier comparison meaningfully changes the price/coverage equation at 12+ months, and Passportcard's no-claim-form model removes a real annoyance.

  • Family with dependents needing maternity

    Tie / depends

IMG Global Medical's maternity rider is competitive; April International's maternity is too. Worth comparing both rather than committing blindly.

  • Slowmad with significant pre-existing conditions

    Competitor

IMG's underwriting capacity for declared pre-existing conditions, especially for US-citizen buyers, is often the better fit.

  • High-earning expat settling long-term

    Tie / depends

If you're truly settling (not nomadding), local + IMG Global Resident may beat anything on our panel.

  • Nomad with US travel requirements

    Competitor

IMG has the deeper US network. Our panel can cover US travel on specific plans, but IMG generally wins the US dimension outright.

Coverage gaps to know

  • US coverage is a real cost driver everywhere. Adding the US to any IPMI plan — ours or IMG's — roughly doubles premium. Don't add it unless you actually need it.
  • Pre-existing conditions are handled very differently by carrier. IMG's medical underwriting is robust but US-style. Passportcard and April underwrite differently and may exclude things IMG would cover (or vice versa).
  • Maternity waiting periods are not negotiable. 10-12 months minimum across virtually every IPMI product, including IMG's.
  • Direct billing isn't universal. Even with IMG's network, you'll sometimes pay out of pocket and claim back in countries without direct-billing relationships. Passportcard's debit-card model genuinely solves this differently.
  • Sanctioned and high-risk countries are excluded by both. Check the country list against your actual route before binding cover.
  • Evacuation cover varies wildly. IMG's evac is solid; our panel's evac is plan-dependent — verify before assuming.

Our honest recommendation

IMG is a real insurer with real claims-paying capacity, a real US network, and decades of operating history. We're not here to bash them — we'd rather route you to IMG directly when that's the right answer than push you onto a panel partner that doesn't fit. That's the entire point of being a matching platform instead of a single-product reseller. For US-citizen long-term expats, for buyers with complex medical histories, and for anyone who genuinely needs deep US coverage — IMG direct is often the call. For everyone else — European-banked nomads, slowmads in Asia and Latin America, families who want Passportcard's no-claim-form model, freelancers comparing IPMI options for the first time — running the Nomadsurance matcher first will surface options IMG can't show you because IMG only sells IMG.
